LESBIAN,
GAY AND BISEXUAL YOUTH ON TV
See
how U.S. television portrayed (and struggled to avoid portraying)
LGB teenagers from the 1970s to the present.
I put
together this 35-minute talk in response to requests from high school
teachers and their schools' gay/straight alliances. It's built around
video clips showing the swift growth and evolution of TV portrayals
of sexual-minority youth since 1979.
See
excerpts of the latest roles (such as the bisexual son on Desperate
Housewives) as well as past breakthroughs including a CBS
Schoolbreak Special from 1987, and series regulars on My So-Called
Life, Once and Again and All My Children, among others.
Between the clips, I describe the behind-the-scenes battles in the
TV industry over whether and how to portray lesbian, gay and bisexual
youth.
